Robert M. Place Artist/Author
Robert M. Place is an internationally known author, visionary artist, and illustrator, whose award winning works, in painting, sculpture, and jewelry, have been displayed in galleries and museums in America, Europe, and Japan and graced the covers and pages of numerous books and publications. His Tarot illustrations have been exhibited at the Museo dei Tarocchi, in 2007, in Riola, Italy, and in the Los Angeles Craft and Folk Art Museum, in California, in 2010. He is the designer, illustrator, and co-author, with Rosemary Ellen Guiley, of: the original Alchemical Tarot and The Angels Tarot, which have received international acclaim particularly for their skillful and illuminating graphics. He is the designer, illustrator, and author of The Alchemical Tarot: Renewed, The Tarot of the Saints, The Buddha Tarot, The Vampire Tarot, The Tarot of the Sevenfold Mystery, and The Facsimile Italian Renaissance Tarocchi, which is included in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York,. He is the author of The Tarot: History, Symbolism, and Divination, which Booklist has said “may be the best book ever written on that deck of cards decorated with mysterious images called the tarot.” He is also the author of The Fool’s Journey: the History, Art, & Symbolism of the Tarot, a catalog of the exhibition that he curated for the Los Angeles Craft and Folk Art Museum. He is the author of Astrology and Divination, Magic and Alchemy, and Shamanism, which are part of the Mysteries, Legends, and Unexplained Phenomena series, and the author of Alchemy and the Tarot: An Examination of the the Historic Connection with a Guide to the Alchemical Tarot. His latest work, The Burning Serpent Oracle, is a deck and book collaboration he created with Tarot diva Rachel Pollack.
Robert is a gifted teacher of the Western mystical tradition and the history and philosophy of the Tarot. He has conducted lectures and workshops in education centers throughout this country, Italy, China, and Australia, including the Open Center, Omega Institute, The New York Tarot Festival, and The Reader’s Studio in New York, The World Tarot Congress in Chicago and Dallas, The Southeastern Regional Tarot Festival in Florida, The 2009 Conference of Esoteric Scholars in Charleston, The Los Angeles Craft and Folk Art Museum, The Museo Dei Torocchi, in Riola, Italy, and the Tarot Society of Australia, in Melbourne. He has appeared on the Discovery Channel series Strictly Supernatural and he and his work has appeared on The BBC, The Learning Channel, Animal Planet, A&E, and the television series Moonlight and Monk. He has been a guest on numerous radio shows including The Woodstock Roundtable on WDST-FM, People are Talking on WKZE-FM , Mystic Musings on KKUP FM, and Darkness on the Edge of Town on KTLK FM.
Robert lives with his wife in the Hudson Valley.
